Uniqlo Set to Reopen in Downtown San Francisco Five Years After Closing Its Powell Street Store

Uniqlo is heading back to downtown San Francisco, and the Japanese clothing retailer has picked a familiar shopping corridor for its return. The company plans to open a new flagship store at 801 Market Street on October 9, 2026, bringing the brand back downtown more than five years after its Powell Street flagship closed.

The comeback puts Uniqlo at the corner of Market and Fourth Streets, inside space previously occupied by Old Navy. The new flagship will cover 20,315 square feet across two floors. That gives the retailer plenty of room for its clothing lines, customization services, repairs, and other features designed to make the store more than a basic shopping stop.

Uniqlo Returns Five Years After Leaving Powell Street

Uniqlo / IG / Uniqlo once had a major presence near Union Square. Its three-story flagship at 111 Powell Street opened in 2012 and became the company’s first West Coast flagship.

The retailer eventually closed that location in 2021 as downtown San Francisco struggled with pandemic-era disruption and a sharp decline in foot traffic.

The closure did not mean Uniqlo disappeared from San Francisco. Its Stonestown Galleria store stayed open, while additional Bay Area locations continued operating in communities including Daly City, Emeryville, San Mateo, Concord, and Pleasanton. The October opening instead marks Uniqlo’s return to the city’s downtown shopping district.

The clothing brand already knows the San Francisco market, and the company has spent several years watching conditions downtown. In April 2025, Uniqlo’s North America real estate director told a city official that the company had been closely monitoring a possible downtown return and was nearing a decision on a location.

Now the company has committed to a prominent Market Street address. Uniqlo USA CEO Fuminori Adachi said San Francisco has long held a special place in the company’s history. The retailer sees the new flagship as a fresh chapter rather than a simple replacement for the Powell Street store.

Old Navy previously occupied the space before leaving in 2023. The property is owned through an affiliate of Ponte Gadea, the real estate investment business associated with Zara founder Amancio Ortega. Uniqlo’s arrival puts another international fashion retailer into a large downtown space that had been sitting empty.

The New Uniqlo Will Offer More Than Clothes

Uniqlo / IG / The new San Francisco flagship will carry Uniqlo’s LifeWear range for men, women, and children.

LifeWear centers on functional everyday clothing, including simple basics, outerwear, knitwear, and technical pieces designed for regular use. The company describes the concept around quality, practicality, simplicity, and longevity.

Shoppers will also get services that were not central to the old-fashioned department store experience. Uniqlo’s newer U.S. locations feature RFID-enabled self-checkout, alteration services, and RE.UNIQLO donation bins. Selected stores also include customization and repair services aimed at keeping clothing in use for longer.

The Market Street flagship will include UTme!, Uniqlo’s customization service for T-shirts and tote bags. Customers can use the service to create more personal pieces instead of choosing only from standard designs. The San Francisco location will also tap into local culture through designs linked to Bay Area artists and organizations.

RE.UNIQLO Studio will give the flagship another practical feature. The concept offers services such as repairs and embroidery, while the wider RE.UNIQLO program collects used clothing for reuse and recycling. That means a torn jacket or worn favorite may have another option besides ending up in the trash.

The store will also have a strong San Francisco flavor. Planned local collaborations include designs connected to Muni, students at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, and local artist fnnch, known for his honey bear images. Those partnerships give the global retailer a direct connection to the city surrounding the store.
