Career Advice for Young People

Business

August 12, 2017

Millennials, your time has finally come. You’re old enough to make important decisions about your future and where your life will go. You’re living in a great time and have a lot of opportunities. All you have to do is know where to start. Today, you can find online all of the information you need to begin a successful career.

Here are some pieces of advice to help you.

It’s not the worst thing to start from the bottom

Every successful person that ever existed had to start from the bottom and build their way up. All you need is one foot in the door. No matter what type of qualification you have, you can always get a job in a field you’re interested in. It may not be the job you wanted or expected, but don’t be disappointed if you get a lower level job than you want—it’s okay, you can still succeed in business.

Just work hard and make sure your work is noticed and you’ll soon be promoted. It will take a few years to get you where you want to be, but it will be worth it if it’s something you really want to do.

Don’t be scared of taking risks

This could be difficult for you if you’re a safe and calculated person who’s never taken a risk in your lifetime. However, there’s a first time for everything. Of course, don’t be reckless and spontaneous all the time! You’re an adult who has to be responsible, but a risk or two every once in awhile could turn into a great opportunity for you that you don’t want to miss out.

Therefore, if you’re presented with a good opportunity that’s a little bit out of your comfort zone, go for it.

 Love what you do

“Find out what you like doing best, and get someone to pay you for doing it.”

— Katharine Whitehorn

They say that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. When choosing a career, think about what you love, what your passions are, and never let other people influence you when it comes to choosing your career path. Money and success will come to you if you focus on your happiness and what you know how to do. Because if you’re doing something you’re passionate about, you’ll be great at your job.

 Your resume and CV

Something you should remember is that a resume and a CV aren’t technically the same thing. There’s a difference between them, and you should always have both of them at hand when applying for a job or going to an interview.

In case you don’t know, a resume will be used for job applications and it is a summary of your credentials, education, work history and other skills you possess. On the other hand, a CV is also a summary of experience and skills, but it’s typically longer than a resume. It’s something like a work autobiography a couple of pages long and as soon as you accomplish something, you should add it to your CV.

 Find a mentor

Do you have someone in your life that’s older than you and has a successful career? Regardless of whether it is a parent, relative or neighbor, find someone whose accomplishments you admire and ask them to be your mentor. Let them tell you the story of how they got where they are. If you know where they’ve been (figuratively speaking), it will be easier to follow in their footsteps.

 Conclusion

You were born in an amazing time when anything is possible and no dream is too big. While older generations faced many roadblocks because they didn’t have all the tools to succeed in business, you have opportunities like nobody in history before you. If you’re willing to fight for something you want, put in the work, ask older people for advice, and you will soon achieve everything you are dreaming of.

You should realize that you don’t have limits and that even though failure does exist, you shouldn’t fear it; you should learn from it. The best way to succeed is to do something you love. Even a hobby could turn into a business if you believe in yourself and work hard into building it into something more. Also, look for inspiration in people who have already achieved their goals—you are not even aware what you are capable of accomplishing.
