Matt Fielding Became One Of The First On-Screen Gay Characters on TV But His Romance Was Kept Censored
It was actually something new for a show in the early ‘90s to have a gay character and Doug Savant got the opportunity to play it. However, the plotlines were very limited, and in fact, when Matt found a boyfriend that he wanted to sleep with, Fox rejected the idea of filming two men in bed together. They were also prohibited from kissing; instead, Matt’s boyfriend was only allowed to rub his ear since there were broadcast standards. Still, considering the times, it was a bold step towards greater inclusivity for LGBT characters on TV.
