An Act of Kindness

Christmas is the time of year when gifts are exchanged and the Christmas spirit is shared through acts of generosity and kindness – most especially for anybody in need. In 2000, Tyrel Wolfe was a seven-year-old boy, doing his share for charity by packing shoeboxes with Christmas gifts including toys, toiletries, and supplies for the less advantaged kids in the Philippines. The shoebox project was run by Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse. Little did Tyrel know what his simple act of kindness would lead to in his future.

More Than a Shoebox

Destiny has its own way of figuring things out. Sometimes, it feels as though the universe orchestrates a chain of events to lead you to a point in your life. Out of 113 million packages sent to more than 130 countries since the launch of the project in 1993, it was Joana Marchan who received Tyrel Wolfe’s shoebox gift. Growing up in a poor Filipino family with very little money, Joanna was immensely happy with the shoebox gift she received. At this point in time, the ball was set in motion.

A Handsome Picture

It was part of the programme for every shoebox-packer to include a picture in the shoebox gift they send. Tyrel slipped a picture of himself into his shoebox package. He was dressed as a cowboy, handsomely posing in a costume and smiling charmingly. Yet again, Tyrel had no idea the photograph would be cherished by the shoebox’s recipient so dearly. When 8-year-old Joana opened her shoebox and saw the picture, she kept it safe for many years.
