Von 2013 bis 2024 führte Tom Buhrow als Intendant den Westdeutschen Rundfunk, ein Job, bei dem man selten unsichtbar bleibt. Der gebürtige Troisdorfer wurde vorher schon als ARD-Chefkorrespondent bekannt, doch auch privat war er immer wieder ein Thema. Viele Jahre war er mit der Journalistin Sabine Stamer verheiratet, die unter anderem durch ihr Buch über Daniel Cohn-Bendit Aufmerksamkeit bekam. Die beiden teilten nicht nur den Alltag, sondern auch eine klare Leidenschaft fürs Schreiben, die sie sogar gemeinsam in Buchform auslebten, insgesamt drei Titel.
1993 sagten Tom und Sabine Ja, und lange wirkte das wie ein solides Team. Nach 23 gemeinsamen Jahren trennten sie sich jedoch, 2016 wurde die Scheidung offiziell. Laut „Bild“ lief das Ganze erstaunlich entspannt ab, weil sie sich schlicht auseinandergelebt hatten, ohne großes Drama. Aus der Ehe gingen zwei Kinder hervor. Damit endete zwar die Partnerschaft, aber die gemeinsame Geschichte bleibt ein ziemlich prägender Teil ihres Lebenslaufs.
