Bettina Schausten begann ihre Karriere in München als freie Mitarbeiterin beim Bayerischen Rundfunk. Von 1992 bis 1996 arbeitete sie beim Südwestfunk, wo sie als Reporterin und Redakteurin der Fernsehnachrichten des Landesfunkhauses Mainz tätig war. Seit März 2019 ist sie stellvertretende Chefredakteurin des ZDF. Zeitgleich übernahm sie die Leitung der Hauptredaktion „Aktuelles“ von Elmar Theveßen, der Leiter des ZDF-Studios in Washington wurde. 156 120 Euro soll Schauster im Jahr verdienen. Das Gesamtvermögen ist nicht bekannt.
