1988 heiratete Maybrit Illner den deutschen Drehbuchautor Michael Illner und nahm dessen Nachnamen an. Die Beiden trennten sich jedoch nach 19 Jahren. Als Illner Manager René Obermann in einer ihrer Shows kennenlernte, entwickelte sich aus dem zunächst beruflichen Gespräch viel mehr als zunächst gedacht. Illner tennte sich vom Krimiautor Michael Illner und auch René Oberman auch von seiner damaligen Lebensgefährtin. Maybrit Illner und René Obermann heirateten im Jahr 2010. Seit 2020 ist Obermann der Chef des Verwaltungsrats der Airbus SE. Das Paar hat keine Kinder.
