Dieses Gesicht kennt man einfach, aus Rollen in Stranger Things, Lucas, Little Woman und Plot against America. Umso absurder wirkt es rückblickend, dass ihr bei einem Casting mal ernsthaft gesagt wurde, sie sei nicht hübsch genug für die Filmbranche und solle sich lieber etwas anderes suchen. Ja, wirklich. Wenn man sieht, wie präsent und unverwechselbar sie auf der Leinwand ist, klingt das wie ein schlechter Witz, nur leider war es keiner.
Solche Sprüche sind leider genau die Sorte Hollywood-Arroganz, die Frauen seit Jahrzehnten zu hören bekommen. Und ausgerechnet bei ihr wirkt es besonders daneben, weil ihre Karriere nie von irgendeinem Schönheitsideal getragen wurde, sondern von Talent, Timing und echter Präsenz. Später sprach sie auch offen darüber, dass sie mit schweren Depressionen zu kämpfen hatte. Das passt erschreckend gut ins Bild: eine Industrie, die Frauen bewertet, kleinmacht und dann so tut, als wäre das alles ganz normal.
