A Stranger at the Fence
Three days later, as the sun dropped behind the hills, Clara saw someone standing at the far end of their fence line. She was too far to see a face, but she could feel the person watching her. He stood with arms at his sides, neither walking nor waving.
Tom ran to get the truck when she called his attention, but by the time they reached the gate, the figure was gone. They checked for footprints, but the soil had hardened. That night, Clara locked every door and brought Elsie into their bed. She slept with one hand on her daughter’s back, afraid to let go.
