The Rain That Shouldn’t Fall
It hadn’t rained in fourteen weeks. The sky had been bone-dry with hot winds. But that evening, a sudden cloud mass rolled in from the west. No thunder. Just slow, steady rain that began falling only on the ridge. Miriam stepped onto the porch and tilted her head, listening. She was convinced it was a response, like something completing.
Clara opened the door and let Elsie run out barefoot, arms raised to the sky. She laughed, spun once, and said, “He’s going now.” They didn’t ask who anymore. Instead, they stood in the quiet and watched as the hill slowly darkened with water.
