By dusk, the rangers had left. Nothing suggested a sick or starving pack. The animals had stayed close and left without confrontation. That wasn’t enough for Clara to get any sleep. She placed Elsie in her crib and sat on the floor beside her. Then she picked up the satellite phone and dialed a number from memory.

Miriam Wilcox had studied behavioral anomalies in predator species. When Clara described what she’d seen, Miriam said only this: “Sometimes they gather, but it’s never random. Something organized them.” Clara asked what that meant. Miriam replied that she should just stay with Elsie because it’s probably not over yet.
