Dingos Surrounded the Baby, but Something Older Watched From the Ridge

A Revealing Trail Cam

Deaks, the ranger, returned midweek with a trail cam they’d left mounted near the ridge months before. It was half-buried in dust, the lens was cracked, and the batteries were nearly drained. He offered to let Tom pull the footage. The three of them sat crowded around the laptop in the kitchen.

On the final recording, time-stamped four nights earlier, the lens showed the outcrop where Clara had left the pouch. The image shifted as the wind moved the brush and then froze. Frame after frame captured one figure, crouched low and unmoving, just outside the stone ring. Features blurred with bare feet. Something hung from its neck.
