Elsie had been piecing together simple requests before—“want cup,” “see light,” “more mum.” The next day, she used a familiar word with a new sense of purpose. “Back,” Elsie announced. They were sorting laundry when Elsie repeated it, more insistently, her small finger pointing firmly at the front door.

Clara knelt beside her. “You want to go back outside?” Elsie didn’t answer. She moved directly to the screen door, her little hand already on the handle, clearly expecting it to be opened. Clara hesitated, then obliged. Elsie immediately turned towards the ridge without prompting. Tom gently intercepted her and heard her murmur, “He’s waiting.” Who was waiting?
