The next morning, an old white Subaru rolled into the yard. Clara ran out before it stopped. Miriam stepped out slowly, face tired, hands shaking as she lit a cigarette. She started talking a bit too quickly. Said she didn’t call because she wasn’t sure what she’d say. But she couldn’t stay away.
Inside, she laid out maps, pages torn from old journals, and printouts of oral histories from desert communities. “What you’re experiencing isn’t random. It’s part of something older than these maps and their stories.” She tapped a marked point near Windermere Ridge, saying that the land remembers. And sometimes, it asks us to do the same.
