Her mind flashed to that hospital floor, where the first of these strange beings had trembled weakly in the bear’s mouth. Its eyes had looked at her not in fear, but in hope. Now more of them waited below, and hope might be all they had left.
Hana scanned the clearing, spotted a thick tree rooted deep into the soil, and rushed to it. Wrapping the rope around its base, she pulled hard, testing for strength. No mistakes could be allowed. Her hands worked quickly, tying knots with deliberate precision. Each pull carried one thought, repeated like a prayer: this had to hold. There would not be another chance.
