The silence shifted, breaking her concentration. The rope jerked forward sharply, almost tearing from her hands. Hana lunged, catching it as it burned against her palms. Her boot came down hard, pinning the end against the stone lip. For a moment, hope flared. She thought she had saved it.
Then came the sickening slack. The rope went limp, with no resistance or weight. The well swallowed the line, leaving only silence. Her chest seized, and her breath was trapped in her throat. She leaned over the edge, straining to see. Darkness stared back. Her voice shook as she called his name, but no answer came. The stillness below was heavier than any sound.
