Der ungarische Ministerpräsident ließ das Karmeliterkloster in Buda, oberhalb von Budapest, aufwändig umbauen und machte daraus ein modernes Anwesen mit politischem und persönlichem Statement. Die historische Anlage war zuvor stark renovierungsbedürftig, doch durch umfangreiche Investitionen entstand eine imposante Residenz mit Blick auf die Donau und die Budaer Burg.
Kritiker sehen darin Machtdemonstration, andere schlicht eine luxuriöse Umnutzung. Der geschätzte Wert liegt laut Expertenmeinungen bei rund 65 Millionen Euro. Ob Regierungssitz oder Privathaus, Orbáns Wohnsituation ist in jedem Fall außergewöhnlich und sorgt nicht nur in Ungarn regelmäßig für Diskussionen.
