Thomas Gottschalk moderierte von 1981 bis 2014 die Samstagabendshow „Wetten, dass..?“ für die er pro Folge eine Gage von 100.000 Euro erhielt. Womit er als zu den bestbezahlten Moderatoren im deutschen Fernsehen zählte.
Im Jahr 1976 heiratete Thomas Gottschalk Thea Hauer, nachdem sie sich in München auf einem Medizinerball kennenlernten. Das Paar hat zwei Kinder, Sohn Roman und Adoptivsohn Tristan. Es lebte bis zu seiner Scheidung im Jahr 2019 in Californien in einem Anwesen das inzwischen den Flammen der kalifornischen Waldbrände zum Opfer gefallen ist.
Beide Söhne von Thomas Gottschalk haben inzwischen ihre eigene Kinder.
