Topmodel Doutzen Kroes en haar echtgenoot, DJ Sunnery James, kozen enkele jaren geleden voor een sfeervolle villa in het pittoreske Huizen, gelegen in het hart van het Gooi. Samen met hun kinderen Phyllon en Myllena genieten ze er van de rust en ruimte die het landelijke leven biedt, ver verwijderd van de hectiek van hun internationale carrières. De aankoopprijs bedroeg € 1.650.000, maar Doutzen besloot het huis volledig naar eigen wens te moderniseren en sloot hiervoor een hypotheek af van maar liefst € 2,5 miljoen.
Tijdens de renovatie stuitte het gezin op een onverwachte en opmerkelijke hindernis: de werkzaamheden moesten stilgelegd worden vanwege een kolonie vleermuizen die hun intrek had genomen in het pand. Omdat deze dieren een beschermde status hebben, kon de verbouwing pas worden hervat nadat een zorgvuldige oplossing was gevonden om de vleermuizen op verantwoorde wijze te verplaatsen.
