Facebook-oprichter Mark Zuckerberg zocht rust en afzondering en vond die op een groot eiland in Hawaï. Voor een bedrag van $145 miljoen verwierf hij een landgoed van maar liefst 250 hectare, oftewel 2,5 miljoen vierkante meter. Het terrein beschikt over bijna een kilometer aan privéstrand, wat hem de ultieme ontsnapping biedt aan de hectiek van zijn publieke leven.
De aankoop riep echter veel kritiek op bij de lokale bevolking. Velen beschouwen de verkoop van zulk uitgestrekt land aan een miljardair als een bedreiging voor hun cultuur en autonomie. Toch is Zuckerberg vastbesloten om hier zijn droomhuis te realiseren, met onbelemmerd uitzicht op de oceaan – een paradijs voor hem, maar een gevoelig onderwerp voor de gemeenschap.
