The Appalachians weren’t spooky in the Halloween sense. They were old-spirit eerie, with the kind of quiet that presses in around your ribs and waits. Harper Jennings didn’t believe in stories. Her cousin Mike didn’t believe in much. But both of them saw it that night on Route 19 near Red Rock; a thing with bear-like limbs and the eyes of a man.

It looked at them like it knew who they were. Then it melted back into the trees without a sound. Something happened that night, and afterward, the forest wasn’t just trees anymore. Whatever was out there wanted to be noticed, and it would never let them go.
