The Forest in Appalachia Remembered Her Face and Followed Her Home
Someone Else Signed Her Name
At the DMV, Harper was told she’d already updated her address. She hadn’t. The clerk showed her the form with her handwriting. Her new address was a cabin two hours deeper into the Appalachian woods, just outside a town called Slag Hollow. It wasn’t on any map.
Harper asked who came in. “You did,” the clerk said. “You had on a red scarf.” She hadn’t worn that scarf in weeks. When she got home, it was gone from the closet. And on the table—keys. They were old, rusted, and tied with a ribbon. She didn’t touch them. That night, she heard something unlock her front door.
