The Forest in Appalachia Remembered Her Face and Followed Her Home

A Journal Full of Teeth

Back at Mike’s place, now officially abandoned, Harper found a notebook hidden under the floorboard. At first, it was full of camping notes, drawings, scribbles, and something else. Taped between the pages were teeth—real teeth.

Maybe they were human, perhaps they were not. Some were too flat, some too pointed. One looked like a molar with a hook. Each page was labeled with dates, places, and a single word repeated: Watcher. Near the end, a single phrase over and over again in red ink: “Don’t let it wear your name.” She tore out the page, and the rest of the journal went up in flames.
