To calm herself, Harper tried sketching again; something she hadn’t done in years. She drew trees, mountains, and things that felt safe. She tried drawing the creature from Route 19, but no matter how many times she erased and redrew, the face came out different each time, more human. The eyes were always yellow, always watching.

One night, she left the notebook open and went to bed. In the morning, a new drawing had appeared. It wasn’t one of hers. It was a drawing of her bedroom, the exact view from her pillow. And in the closet, two eyes glowed faintly in the dark. That night, she didn’t sleep at all.
