The Forest in Appalachia Remembered Her Face and Followed Her Home

Not Her Reflection

Harper avoided mirrors for days. But in a gas station bathroom, she couldn’t help it. Her reflection blinked wrong, delayed by half a second. She stepped to the left, and it lagged. Then it smiled, just slightly. She didn’t. She slammed the light off and bolted. Back in her car, she caught her face in the rearview.

This time, her reflection moved with her. She thought maybe it was stress. Maybe sleep deprivation. But hours later, passing a storefront downtown, her reflection didn’t show at all, just the street behind her. And for one horrible second, she swore something else stood in her place.
