A Dead Deer That Blinked

They’d only been back in the city for a few days when Harper saw something wrong again. She was walking home late from work, cutting through a park just off the interstate. There was a deer on the path, fresh roadkill, by the look of it. But as she passed, its eye twitched. Then it blinked.

Harper froze. One leg gave a jerk, too fast, too clean, like a puppet on a line. She backed away slowly. When she looked again, the dead deer hadn’t moved. But its eye followed her. Back home, she locked every door. That night, her phone rang once. No number, and all she heard was static.
