The Forest in Appalachia Remembered Her Face and Followed Her Home

How She Lives On

Now, Harper lives alone. She doesn’t go out much, except to meet Mike, who returned the night she met the skinwalker. She never uses GPS and doesn’t keep mirrors. But sometimes, in the black screen of her phone, she catches a flicker of herself blinking out of sync. The trees near her apartment stay thick, even in autumn.

Her voice sounds different in recordings now, like someone else answering for her. At night, she hears knocks at the door but never opens it because she remembers the rule: Don’t let it wear your name. Except she’s not sure if she still has one.
