The Forest in Appalachia Remembered Her Face and Followed Her Home

Dream or Memory?

Harper hadn’t dreamed in years, not that she could remember. But this one felt like something else entirely. She was in the woods, walking barefoot, following a sound like humming wires. Trees bent inward, and branches clawed at her shirt. Then she saw it again; those yellow eyes, just above the ferns.

In the dream, she didn’t run. She knelt, smiled, and reached out. When she woke up at midnight, her feet were filthy, twigs were in her sheets, and mud hid under her nails. Her front door was unlocked. She called Mike. He didn’t answer. She tried again. This time, someone picked up. She heard breathing, then nothing else.
