Tim steadied the ladder, heart pounding. He wasn’t supposed to climb without backup, but the disturbing silence had eaten at him long enough. He had to see inside. Usually, the rustling of his approach would have sent birds into a frenzy. This time, not a single wing flapped.
Reaching the nest, he froze. A jagged hole gaped at him from its side, but that wasn’t the worst part. Something unnatural was lodged within the twigs—something that didn’t belong. His grip slipped for a second, breath hitching. His gut told him to get down, but his hands were already dialing. Whatever was inside, it wasn’t meant to be found.
