Meet Sophie, The Scarlet Ibis

In 2018, CBS News 8’s “Morning News” anchors had an eventful day when a scarlet ibis did something unexpected n live TV. They are medium-sized to large wading and terrestrial birds, related to storks and very closely related to spoonbills.

The ten-year-old birdie named Sophie sat atop the head of Nichelle Medina, who was teasing their Zoo Day segment when the ibis ambassador, one of two from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, did its bit. Despite the surprise intrusion, the Emmy winner kept her composure, demonstrating professionalism. Eric Kahnert, Medina’s colleague, was less at ease with the guest, as you can see in the photo.
