The Michael Fish Effect
Michael Fish, British television’s longest-serving broadcast meteorologist, had an enthusiastic fan base. However, his reliability was questioned after a 1987 live broadcast. Fish renounced a woman’s warning that a hurricane was heading for the United Kingdom, reassuring the public there was nothing to worry about.
Sadly, the storm hit, leading to the death of over 15 people and substantial damage to properties. Fish later apologized for his erroneous forecast. After that, the term “the Michael Fish effect” was coined, applying to public predictions on any subject that turn out to be embarrassingly wrong. In fact, British weather forecasters became inclined to predict a worst-case scenario to dodge being caught out.
