The Forest in Appalachia Remembered Her Face and Followed Her Home

Stuck on Red Rock

She drove west, planning to pass Red Rock wide. But no matter which road she took, the signs kept showing up—Red Rock: 12 miles. Red Rock: 8 miles. Her GPS blinked back on, showing her on Route 19. She hadn’t entered it. She hadn’t even touched her phone! Harper slammed the brakes and pulled over.

The forest around her didn’t move. There was no wind. No sound. Then her radio clicked on; no static, just breathing. Long. Wet. Close. She turned it off. But the sound continued from the back seat. She didn’t look. She just drove. She didn’t stop until she hit daylight.
