In 1980, Steve Carter, a U.S Army officer, was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii and living with his wife, Pat. It was then when they decided they wanted to adopt a child. They were smitten by a three-and-a-half-year-old kid named Tenzin Amea, who was in foster care on the island. Born in January 1977, Tenzin was already in the state’s care for three years. Steve and Pat revealed that the moment they saw him, they felt it was love at first sight, and adopted him in the fall of 1980, once the paperwork was over and done with.
